Question regarding potential modification of the dll file

Ok first a bit of background info.
In order to use a 360 gamepad with the game one must use a 3rd party software such as Pinnacle Game Profiler. In order to have identical controls to that of 360 a modified directx8.dll is required to block pressing the right stick button opening the menu. (or rather block the game from registering the button as the esc key) This is button number 10 on generic controllers.
Now the question.
Would it be possible to modify the dll file so that said button is blocked? (possibly even via a hex editor if need be)
If it is not possible, is there an alternate name that can be used for the dll?
I've tried a few alternate names for the gamepad dll to no avail.
