How to make a slow PC faster:

Who doesn't know the problem? The PC is getting slower and slower after some time... but how can we prevent it?

Problem:

Windows (XP, Vista, 7 or 8) creates temporary files and folders for each newly installed program. After installing a program, Windows is too lazy to delete those files. That causes the files being spread all over the HDD (= fragmentation) and prevents a quick start of all programs.

Additionally, the boot time of Windows will increase.

Solution:

Basically, you can speed up Windows completely with built-in components. But there are also some tools that can do the work for you.

Defragment

Put file parts (= fragments) back together. Access time to the files is reduced, Windows boots faster.
Windows-defragmentation
Alternative program: Defraggler

Remove programs from the autostart

Less programs will be loaded at startup. Windows boots faster.
msconfig.msc
Alternative program: CCleaner/Soluto

Clean the registry

Remove useless entrys from the registry
regedit.exe
Alternative program: CCleaner

Uninstall programs

More free space on your HDD
Windows disk cleanup
Alternative program: IObit Uninstaller

Update drivers and programs

Remove security gaps and boost up your GPU's performance:
Filehippo Update Checker
AMD- and Nvidia-Homepage

Settings in BBC2 to get a better performance:

To get an ATI frames boost:
- Set Catalyst A.I to max

For a reported 10-20 fps boost:
- Documents>BFBC2 and open up "settings.ini"
- Change "renderaheadlimit" to 0 instead of 2

For a reported giant general performance boost:
- Documents>BFBC2 and open up "settings.ini"
- Change "Bloom=true" to false

For another potentially big performance update (especially with Quad Core users):
- Documents>BFBC2 and open up "settings"
- Change "HSAO=true" to false (also settable in the in-game "advanced" graphics settings)

Other settings.ini changes that you can try:
- Undergrowth=”medium” – Put this to low, if experiencing frame-rate issues.
- Water=”medium” - Not really any water to traverse in this map, go ahead and set this to low.
- MSAA=”2″ - This is Anti-aliasing, this will always use up a lot of a gpx cards resources. Set this to “0″
- Shadows=”medium”- You can also set this to low to improve performance
- Textures=”medium”- Setting this to low can improve FPS at the cost of visual eye candy.
- Aniso=2 - Set this to 0 to disable Anisotropic filtering.

To run DX9 for improved performance (this also stops random crashes for some people):
- Documents>BFBC2 and open up "settings"
- Add "DxVersion=dx9" to the list (without quotation)

Other BC2 settings can be modified with the Evil Minds Configurator: http://www.mediafire.com/?ndk3mzjzdez

It's a nice tool, you can also set your mouse sensitivity for vehicle, heli, soldier and so on...
